Becoming Addicted To Your Future

I have looked at the HOW<WHAT<WHY structure for years. Know WHAT you want, and WHY you want it. Only then does the “How” matter.

But I thought of another statement: “You choose a goal not just for the end point, but the person you become along the way.”

The person you will NEED to be to do the things that get the result. This is the purpose of modeling. If you can find someone, or a group of someones, who accomplished your intent starting from where you started, people who are in alignment with your best values, people who, in other words “you wouldn’t mind growing up to be”, you are gold.

Now, think about the definition of Mastery we’re using: “Mastery is a verb, not a noun. A vector, not a position. And when you have learned the basics of your craft to the level of unconscious competence, such that you can create spontaneously under pressure, and have committed to your craft for a lifetime, you are on the PATH OF MASTERY as much as anyone else who has ever been on that path.”

I ask you to look at one more set of statements: “Master one thing, master ten thousand things.” or Jerry Pournelle’s “once you mastered anything, you know how to master anything else.”

How? Be the person who can do the things, every day, that keep you on the path. Time takes care of the rest. Being that person means aligning your goals, values, beliefs, and positive/negative emotional charges with those of a person who gets up every day and “chops wood, carries water” — simply…
