I woke up this morning, and listened to my breathing. As soon as I listen, it becomes conscious, as if my body is waiting for me to say “inhale.” But if all I do is exhale, and then relax, I can lay there until my body takes over. Actually FEEL the life force within me, my body’s instinctive actions, triggered by a raise in CO2, to make me inhale. If I relax, my body will do it automatically.

What if I resist? What if I try to stop the process? The carbon dioxide builds up, my world gets fuzzier, and the will to say STOP weakens…

And I breathe.

Treat this feeling, this expansion of something that releases tension, and without tension air pressure automatically fills your lungs. If you focus on EXHALATION and then relax, you are in the “Be Breathed” territory, where instead of inhaling, you exhale, relax, and have FAITH that your body knows what it is doing.

Can you find that place? That feeling? That impulse to inhale is the real you. It is, at any rate, CLOSER to the real you than the thing people call by your name. You can glimpse it, but stare directly and you are back in conscious action.

Let it go. Observe dispassionately. If you are careful, and calm, you will gilmpse not just the Breather, but the Observer. The instant you think “I” it slips away again.

That’s fine. Think of this subtle being, the one that breathes without conscious effort, the one who observes…
