Going to the Zoo
The Three Gates do not save you from being dishonest, cruel, or ineffective. But simply committing to them creates a standard, and over time you will find yourself asking better, deeper questions about who you are, and what is true, kind, and useful. I believe it a path to being a better person, and creating a better world.
Watch the people who mock it, or will not commit to it: they see lies and cruelty as “useful.” It is IMO a form of insanity, and while maybe we’re all a little crazy, this form is common, and dangerous. From the outside, you cannot tell if they believe what they are saying…or are lying deliberately, gaslighting you.
As long as people in the immediate circle are not taken in, you can afford to observe your own reactions, find the internal balance. Observe them as if you are looking at something under a microscope. How does it work? What does it want? What errors in philosophy or perspective have created this?
Clearly, they either shun the concepts of the Three Gates, or isolate them (“I’ll be honest/kind with my family”) to function. CON MEN ARE SUPER PLAUSIBLE. Learn to look for smaller indications, inconsistencies. This is critical, because the NEXT one you encounter will be more difficult to detect.
Ultimately, I find the Three Gates to be critical. What is “True” deeply affects all three of them from my own philosophical perspective. “Kindness” is easy IF it is true that we are all connected. The caring you give to yourself you extend to others. But if you are an adult, you also…
