Hardware and Software and UHC
From time to time, someone will tell me that the advantages in longevity found in countries with Universal Health Care are due to factors other than health care. Then, they go on to discuss behavior-based activities. If they don’t grasp that “health” includes mental health, emotional counseling, and so forth, that is their ignorance. If they think some people enjoy being sick or hurting, that is also their ignorance.
All human ana animal behavior seeks to move away from pain toward pleasure. Most of those snarled in negative behaviors (drug addiction, smoking, overeating) basically have crossed wires, values conflicts, negative beliefs and toxic emotional anchors. They are egotistical enough to believe their own actions are controlled by their conscious minds, without grasping the vast structure of unconscious mechanisms under the surface. I see nothing, NOTHING about their software that could not be undone. I suspect that deep inside those who advocate opposite positions are are really saying “those people” are genetically flawed. That some people are simply…inferior. But don’t have the basic honesty to say it out loud.
If its software, it can be changed.
The most honest thing would be for someone to really be saying “I personally don’t know how to deal with my demons, so it must be impossible for ANYONE to.” That is human, if easily falsifiable. The other is: “I’m better than these people, and it would be a waste of time and effort to try to help them, when they can’t be helped.” That’s sort of honest, if…
