So yesterday I was discussing the AWAKENING THE WARRIOR WITHIN workshop, and how “Gloria”, paralyzed by fear, became a roaring tiger when she imagined protecting not herself, but her helpless little sister.

What causes this? If you say “women are taught not to care for themselves” you have some truth there, but only because ADULTS are taught not to care for themselves. That the reality is that we all are taught to focus on protecting the children, and sacrifice our dreams for “responsibility.” That may be true, but what in addition creates specific inability to tap into your “Lioness” or “Lion” energy? Well, society (which evolved for the needs of both men and women) definitely discourages women from being aggressive, just as it punishes men for being NON-aggressive. That beauty-power thing again. And this works so long as both men and women play their roles, and society functions as it should.

But it sucks, if you are going to be awake, aware, adult human beings. Autonomous individuals. Doing THAT demands being in touch with both your strength AND your softness. “Gloria” was not. She was paralyzed with “I can’t” and “I mustn’t” and “what would people think?” there was probably also some “If I fight back, I’ll just be hurt worse” in there.

All of that confusion. All swept away by the notion of protecting a helpless loved one. What you have to remember is that confusion, like dishonesty, doesn’t remain in one arena of your life — it distorts other things as well.
