Herding Cats, Pushing String
So…I spoke yesterday of an estimate about the amount of work necessary to reach “take off” speed and maintain acceleration in a smooth, sustainable fashion. It’s a little like the science fiction concept of the “light sail” where a laser or other energy source pushes against your surface, slowly accelerating you until you eventually reach a serious fraction of the speed of light.
Slow and steady. Based on the “a sentence a day” notion that removes all rational arguments against your progress.
- Sentence a day: absolute minimum
- 5 pages of rough, 25 pages of editing: working sustaining accelerative minimum
So the “five pages a day” is what I expect of myself during the work week, but the “sentence a day” is EVERY DAY, 365 days a year. No days off. It’s a little like stretching or joint mobility when I get out of bed. Why in the WORLD would I not do it, when I know that sensory motor amnesia leads to injuries. Ever throw your back out while reaching up into a cupboard? Sensory motor amnesia. You didn’t even feel that your body didn’t have that movement potential at that moment, because you didn’t feel the warning signs.
WHERE DOES CREATIVITY COME FROM?
I’d say its just idea bashing against each other in the unconscious mind, the same thing that feeds into our dreams. Combined with our developed aesthetic sense, we sort out the better ideas from the irrational ones. I filter by:
- Ideas that sound fun
