Influence #7: Connect to Higher Purpose

The last of the seven Robbins-Madanes “influence” steps is to relate whatever change you want to make to your higher purpose. Or, obviously, help the client do so. This is generally something larger than yourself, something that will outlive you, something outside the bounds of ego.

It might be a God figure, family, team, community, nature, mankind, your evolution to the next level…any number of things. Your ultimate essence of being. SOMETHING larger and stronger and more permanent than your own four score and ten. It is said that if you can create rapport, continuously break their pattern and connect the goal to their higher being, that’s all you need. But those are the three most important pieces of the puzzle.

Why does this work? Let’s look at a hint in the “Hero’s Journey.”

4. Road of trials
5. Allies and powers
6. Confront evil-defeated
7. Dark Night
8. Leap of Faith

10. Student becomes the teacher.

What this pattern says is that ANY time you seek to rise to the next level, you will eventually run into your limits: “the only way you know how far you can go is by going too far.”
