Jason’s Heroic Journey

Here are the ten steps of the Hero’s Journey as applied story, writing, and Life:

  1. The Hero is confronted with a challenge
  2. The hero rejects the challenge
  3. The hero accepts the challenge
  4. The road of trials
  5. Gathering Allies and powers
  6. Confront Evil — Defeated
  7. Dark Night of the Soul
  8. The Leap of Faith
  9. Confront Evil — Victorious
  10. The Student becomes the teacher

There is no human process that cannot be mapped on this arc. No story recognized as such by the human nervous system that is not a complete or fractional relation to this arc. That is Lifewriting’s theory, and thus far, no one has been able to successfully refute it, IMO.

We may have glimpsed Endgame for Jason. For over a year, he has dreamed of taking a “Gap Year”, renting a house to share with 3–4 of his VR friends. In other words, a year of learning business to make money, a gap year of Bachelors On The Loose, and then off to college.

Looking at his, Tananarive came to the same conclusions from different directions: this could be it. We cannot guarantee that he will get a degree after the “Gap” but we CAN be certain he is an adult before he gets that rental.

In other words, we can ask ourselves “under what circumstances would we support him doing this?”
