About once a Year, I like to go through THINK AND GROW RICH, which was the first “self help” book I remember clearly being exposed to. My mom used to play records of abridged versions of it, over and over. I hated it. But…it sank in, and later in life I tested each of the principles through positive experiment and “Via Negativa” reversal: “what happens if you DON’T have this quality, or do the opposite of this suggestion?”

What I want to do over the next two weeks, while I’m packing and moving (we’re heading to a new house!) and packing and traveling to Worldcon in Chicago, it would be useful to have a thematic outline for my daily musings. Napoleon Hill’s “13 Principles of success” will work well here.

Basically, the mythology of the book is that Napoleon Hill went to Andrew Carnegie in the 1920’s, seeking employment. Instead of hiring him, Carnegie asked if he would be willing to produce a practical guide to success, with Carnegie offering only a small stipend and letters of introduction to a number of the most successful men of the time, including Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.
