What am I grateful for today?

I wake up in the morning, and that is one of the very first questions I ask. And the answer is often: the opportunity to help someone. SOMEONE I will touch today needs what I have to say. And all I have to do is honestly share my journey, and I’ll reach the person who needs it the most.

I don’t have to be perfect, as an adjective. I can share the journey of perfection as a verb. To perfect. To polish, fix, improve. That’s all it takes.

What do I have to be grateful for?

For my health and sanity. The people who love and trust me: my children Jason and Nicki. For my beautiful, brilliant wife Tananarive. My sister Joyce. My niece and nephew. My beloved friends and companions. I give thanks for these EVERY DAY. It reminds me of the fruits of my journey thus far. I have been blessed.

For my mentors in life, writing, and martial arts. Blessed. Of course, there are people more successful than I am in any specific external arena. But in combination? Starting frrom where I began, with the personal and social resources I was given? I have no need to bow to anyone, anywhere.

And the only cost to have that sincere feeling is knowing that no one needs bow to me. We’re all just on this journey together. If I accurately describe the territory, and speak the truth about my failures as well as successes, weaknesses as well as strengths, I will appeal to people who are on a similar journey.
