The “Blessing Dance” Revisited

Let’s continue the month-long Valentine Challenge of connecting more deeply with the love within us, and those we love. One tool very recently acquired is the Sufic “Blessing Dance” to be performed daily by mates and perhaps families. A new dimension of its power opened yesterday.

To recap, Tananarive and I…

1) Face each other and bow.

2) Put out right palms.

3) With my left hand, take her right hand and place it over my heart. She does the same.

4) Look deeply into each others’ eyes. Past all I know about her humanity to find the sacred being behind her eyes. 1 minute.

5) Sing a little song: “You are my beloved. I open my heart to you.”

6) Then keep looking into each other’s souls for another 20 seconds

7) Hug each other for another 20 seconds.

8) Bow to each other’s spirits.

I’ve practiced this three times since last week. The first two times were the most powerful, the third we were laughing, which makes me think that it really works beautifully. You know what it reminds me of? The “Morning Ritual” I devised for Jason when we were in Atlanta: sitting facing each other, cross legged and holding hands. Locking eyes (almost impossible for him, at first). Breathing together.

Yesterday, my son had a hard morning. The Pandemic is really messing with him, and after being locked…
