“The Lie” (2020)
THE LIE (2020)
Ooof. I have to admit that I avoided “The Lie,” an Amazon exclusive, after the first ten minutes. The tale of a mother and father making horrible choices in response to an even worse situation, was spiraling downhill, fast. I couldn’t get into it for the same reason I’ll probably never write a comedy: most comedy is based on watching people make bad choices, often for good reason. The “why doesn’t he just @@#$$ TELL HER??” Voice in my head often pops up before I can just relax and laugh…or scream.
Yeah, it’s a suspense story. Not many laughs, I ‘ll tell you. But Tuesday Tananarive wanted to watch it, so I did. It was both better and worse than I expected. Well shot, written, and acted. Reminded me of BREAKING BAD in the sense that these people start with good intentions (defending their daughter from the consequences of her actions)….and end up discovering rather ugly things about themselves. Yerch.
And I’m sure that a lot of viewers would say: “well, what choice did they have?” And I can only shake my head and say that the Three Gates would have been their best bet, even if it didn’t seem so at the time. It’s worth checking out, but…ooof.
