The Path Beyond Mastery

One of my teachers challenged me to improve my performance 10X. The point being to notice how that concept changes my thought, plans, actions. How does it feel emotionally. What does it mean to me. It was…intimidating.

That means overshooting everything, taking the lid off. Aiming at more than “mastery” when “mastery” is all I ever aimed at. What would that even MEAN? Could I even find language to express it?

So…what if the level above “master” is called “magician.” Let’s assume that “M.A.G.I.C.” combined with the best models I can find are the third axis I cannot identify. The other two. (Hero’s Journey and Chakras) will keep me safe.

That makes sense.

Every morning, I share a thought with my son Jason. Today’s might be useful in thinking about this.

“You know that part of the movie where the hero is gathering his Allies and Powers? That’s you. Right now. The Hero, on the Road of Trials.”

Yeah, you know that part. The Hero has accepted the challenge and begun to walk the Road of Trials. (And by the way, while there are large and small journeys, external and internal journeys, simultaneous and sequential journeys, the difference between two individuals chosen at random is larger than that between members of any group defined by things like race and gender).

There is a gap between where she is, and where she wants or needs to be. This is the “gap” she has to cross. Usually, she CANNOT move to a new level with the same…
