Mastery is excellence at excellence. Not just being good at something, but knowing how to get good at anything else, by refining that process. And the Warrior’s Journey group seems to be evolving into a place to have these discussions more purely than anywhere else in my life.

“A question for the Steven, or the group at large: If my goal is to create something novel (I think it is, at least), and I don’t personally know or know of anyone who has successfully done something like it (particularly starting from circumstances similar to my own), who or what do I model?”

A damned fine question. If I want to drive a car, I can talk to anyone in traffic, and all my neighbors. If I want to FIX a car, I talk to a mechanic. Smaller group. If I want to build a car from scratch, I have to speak to a MASTER mechanic, or an engineer. Smaller group yet. If I want to design a car…even smaller. But if I want to invent the first internal combustion engine..?

Something that doesn’t exist? Then I have to study the people who have created things that didn’t exist before. Luckily, there are plenty of them, and if you study the art and science of creative breakthrough, you’ll have your answer. There are many tools and structures, but let’s use the Hero’s Journey.

  1. Define clearly (or as clearly as possible) what you want to achieve. Say: a new form of transportation, a way to beat an unconquerable opponent, a book exploring new ideas in new ways. ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE.
