The Unbroken Breath: How I’m Healing My Hip and Designing My Next Act

QOD: “What’s one thing I’ve already won that I’m not celebrating?”

The answer stops me cold. I’ve already won. Every childhood dream — love, family, creative freedom — has come to pass. Celebrating that isn’t vanity; it’s the essential act of clearing the deck for what’s next.

And what’s next is being built on the foundation of my current reality: recovering from a hip replacement.

In a perfect world, I’d have started my Tai Chi recovery on Day One. Not as a macho feat, but as a daily, concrete step. My rule is the unbroken thread of breath, a lesson from yogi Rod Stryker: if you follow your breath, you won’t hurt yourself. So my morning ritual now is to move so the form “breathes me,” the silk-reeling motion of Tai Chi compressing and releasing my diaphragm. If my breath hitches, I know I’m pushing too hard. It’s my built-in safety monitor.

This isn’t about rushing. The advice was 90 days of remedial work. I gave myself 108. Now, feeling strong, I’m adjusting to 102. That’s still a margin of care. This period isn’t a setback; it’s a mandatory retreat to rewire my body-mind, to synthesize a new path from Tai Chi back to Kali, from yoga to writing, creating a cohesive whole for the next act. My war is over. This is about integrated power.

So, how does Firedance map onto this?
