The Value of Being Wrong

Someone accused me of wanting an echo chamber on my Facebook page. That’s interesting, but what I want is to only have discussions with people who see the world similarly enough that communication can actually take place. Otherwise, it’s just a pointless argument. Want a pointless argument? Talk about a math equation using base ten while the other guy is using base six. Good luck with that.

What is fun is when people think they CAN. Nope, not unless you first have the conversation about which number system you are using, and finding a Rosetta stone, a common system both are willing to accept, translate your numbers to THAT, and then start over again. Otherwise, just screaming.

Seems to me that there are two basic sets of people who will argue with you that you should continue the discussion.

  1. Those who genuinely don’t see that you are talking about two different things. They are RAMs: Reading Another Map. This can be honest and honorable, if a little inflexible and lacking perspective. They don’t realize they are in Greece while you are in Japan, and arguing about typical breakfast meals without backing up and realizing that being in two different countries makes the conversation meaningless UNLESS AND UNTIL you realize you are indeed in two different countries.
  2. The other is snakes. They understand quite well that there is no real communication. Communication is not their point. WINNING is their point, and they win if they slow you down or confuse you. Why would they waste your time? Using…
