So true. It is incredibly valuable to live your life on your terms, in your way, to make yourself happy LONG term. But to follow that advice, you need to have a clear answer to the question “what ARE my core values?” and ‘what is the nature of my essential being?”
In truth, if you answer the second question, the first (“values”) is easy. So that second question is the same as “who am I?” That question is so primary that the entire world, everyone you meet or work for, every educator, every friend and lover you ever have will try to give you answers for it…and the answers will always be something good for THEM.
Maybe it will be good for you…maybe not. There are many ways of working this out, but please — find one. We talk about the “Ancient Child,” which is a way of aligning childhood dreams with deathbed values. This will give you a vector toward your true self. There are others. FIND ONE. Simply asking “who am I?” can be useful, as any answer that can be put into words is still dancing on the surface. So while some are useful, their most useful purpose is to point in a direction, dynamically, rather than forming an end point.
The person you THINK you are is connected to all of those external identities, and because it thinks it is you, it will panic if you question the illusion too carefully. Tempt you to fall asleep during meditations, to…
