Who Are You Becoming?

“”Take one step, every day, and before long those who are standing still will swear you were BORN on the far side of their horizon.” — some guy on Facebook

The most important thing about a goal is WHO you become along the way. If you set goals in all three major arenas INDIVIDUALLY would make you a better version of who you are, then you CANNOT accomplish all three without learning things at “unconscious competence” that are real, and genuine.

Physically. Start here. Believe it or not, mastery of the physical body is the EASIEST of the three arenas, on average. Why? Because you could accomplish all of its basics without the cooperation of even a single other human being. While it is better and easier to do this with mentors and partners, you COULD. You could be stranded on a desert island and if you had good food and a couple of good books on the subject, you could get into amazing shape. Call this the “Atomic” unit of human existence. I gained clarity here by studying Steve Muhammad and the extraordinary young athletes of the BKF…and then looking at the amazing vitality of advanced Ashtanga Yoga practitioners.

Emotionally. Starting with loving yourself, again you don’t NEED anyone else. But to take it to the next level and get onto that human “train” of typical action you need a partner. The family is the basic “molecular” unit of human existence. And while almost anyone can “get married”, the “soulmate” level is probably equivalent to “physical master” and is EASILY twice as difficult as just the physical. Might be as much as 10X as hard, based on casually collected stats. I had no specific individual model here, but DID know that I wanted a “Soulmate” that sense of your own heart divided in two, that you’ve met someone with whom you can open the doorway to your future. This was anchored n the observation that “A lioness wants a lion.” Once I saw the simple truth of that, the rest was just sweat and blood and fear and modeling joy.

Mental. We measure this as problem-solving capacity related to hunting and gathering. The ability to create abundance AND HAVE FUN IN THE PROCESS.

AVOID PAIN. EMBRACE JOY. COMMIT TO SERVICE. The mental arena, money, allows you to be of REAL service to people even when you aren’t there. Even if you’ve never met them. Until you have bought food for a week for a school in some war or poverty-torn area, you’ve never grasped the power of this. Doing this in the Arts was my path. Writing. Which meant I had to master writing AND understand the business enough to make my moves, even if it took me years or DECADES to plan and plot and strategize and build teams. The Lifewriting “6-Step” process is our best guess about how to get on THIS train. I needed that clarity. There are multiple writers and artists who seemed to radiate joy in their work and lives.

The overall goal: “1% daily increase in amplitude and congruence of body, mind, and spirit” was my first hack at this. I encourage students to aim at 1% per week. Without serious safety rails, my ambitions would hurt you. They hurt ME, before I found them.

And the best safety rails are the combination of Three Centers (the above balance) and Three Gates (“Is it True?” “Is it Kind?” “Is it Useful?”).

The combination of these two is stupendous. Transformative. And I wish I’d found them forty years ago. Well, to heck with it: I have them now.

If you’ll take a look at these, perform the experiment of seeing what goals you can see, how you would formulate them as SMART goals, what role models, beliefs, and values you would need to support them. The emotions you think I’d need to generate every day.

Do these things, and you will understand what I’m trying to say. If you will also take the first three Firedance steps:

1) 5 minute miracle

2) MAGIC

3) Morning Ritual

You will know everything you need to know about my Path, even if we never spoke again. You’ll be off on your own journey. And if we meet again, close enough on our individual paths up the mountain to wave at each other…

How cool will THAT be?
