Who Is Responsible For Us?

I just had someone say it was unreasonable to suggest to people that they can beat the odds. “95% of people who try diets fail.” That’s interesting. I could say “99% of people who try to be professional writers fail.” “95% of people who start training in martial arts fail to reach black belt.” “60% of marriages fail” or “Most people who try to quit smoking/drinking/drugging fail” or whatever. Most people fail to save, even if they earn good money. Most never learn a second language. And on and on.

Why…its all true! And 98% people born into poverty generally fail to raise themselves up, let alone claw their way to wealth. And on and on.

Some believe that saying we have the responsibility to take control of our lives, that is the same as saying you should feel guilt, blame, or shame if you don’t, or can’t, or fail in the attempt.

The voice telling you that is not your friend, and not your best self. You can ALWAYS find people willing to agree with you that you cannot change.

“Responsibility” means “the ability to respond”. “Adulthood” is the “point of conation.” The point at which you are responsible for your actions and emotions. The average person, thrown into terrible birth circumstances, will behave like the average person we find in those circumstances.

But…did someone tell you you have to be average? That you have to watch as much television as the average person? Eat what they eat? Think what they think?
