Why Kindness? Because “Life Finds A Way”

“Why Kindness? Isn’t it enough for it to be True and Useful?”

I was asked that yesterday, and wanted to address it. And woke up this morning with a scene from Jurassic Park running through my mind. It was the scene in which “Mr. DNA” explains that after recovering “Dino DNA” from mosquitos stuck in amber, they fill in the missing pieces with the genetic code of frogs. This leads (possibly — it is only a theory, never actually explored) to dinosaurs spontaneously changing gender, as do certain amphibians, making it possible to breed despite safeguards.

“Life finds the way” to escape from the box, as the theme goes. And I find that useful here.

The human capacity for love, growth, interconnection and awakening is balanced by our capacity for fear, cruelty, oppression and obliviousness. We have to be careful. The fact is that the Three Gates represent safety rails for human speech, thought, behavior, and interaction. When you combine them something special happens.

IS IT TRUE? Well, one truth is that we cannot ever be certain what is true! We can’t be certain we are correct about the world around us. We can have perceptions, memories, opinions. But we just CAN’T quite get all the way to Truth. But…we can inquire. Find and refine methods of testing. There are entire philosophies of inquiry, and in fact the term “philosophy” basically means “to seek truth.” Personally, I like to ask if a given perspective…
